Bikram Yoga is the single best form of yoga for the achievement and maintenance of perfect health, a perfect body, and a clear & sharp mind.
"Regardless of your age or current physical condition, you'll laugh, cry, moan, groan, sweat and experience the most exciting, hard working and effective therapeutic yoga routine in the world." -Bikram Choudhury
What is Bikram Yoga?
The Bikram Yoga practice is a 90-minute class specifically designed to work every muscle, bone, joint, ligament, tendon, gland & organ in the body. With its intelligently designed sequence of 26 postures (asanas); you will improve strength, balance & flexibility, you will reshape & heal your body as well as relieve stress & tension. Additional benefits include the prevention of illness, injury and the limiting effects of aging; balance metabolism, improve circulation, promote weight loss and muscle tone, alleviate anxiety and depression, and heal your body inside out, from the bones to the skin.
Who can do Bikram Yoga?
Students of all levels and ages benefit from this total body workout. Regardless of your skill level, expect to work hard, sweat a lot, and feel fantastic afterward!
Why is it hot?
The heat allows your muscles to be more flexible, giving you a safer and deeper stretch. It also promotes detoxification through sweating and provides a more cardiovascular workout. In addition, the heat also helps melt fat, thins the blood to clear the circulatory system, improves muscle strength and prohibits cholesterol from "sticking" to protein.
Will Bikram Yoga help me lose weight?
Absolutely. Bikram Yoga certainly speeds up weight loss, but like any form of exercise, it is not an instant cure. Consistent practice combined with a balanced diet is the best avenue to weight loss. Most students will discover that as they lose fat, they gain muscle. This means that your weight may not change significantly, but your clothes will fit you the way they’re supposed to! Other benefits of Bikram Yoga include; a deeper sleep, a stronger immune system, less moodiness and much more.
Why does it work?
Bikram Yoga works 100% of the entire body from the inside out. The series of stretches and compressions exercise your muscles, joints, tendons, ligaments, organs, nerves and glands. Upon release of each posture, fresh oxygenated blood travels through your body and rejuvenates the vessels and tissues that were being compressed.
You can burn 600 to 1,000 calories per class, depending on your work-rate.
What should I wear?
As little as possible! The room will be hot, so shorts and a t-shirt are appropriate for both men and women.
How much water should I be drinking, and when?
To experience the full benefits of Bikram Yoga it's vital you are fully hydrated. Drink plenty of water the entire day before, and the hours before you come to class, as well as plenty after class.
How much is enough? A good formula is to take your body weight and divide by 2. This is how much water you should consume daily. Here's an example: 150lb/2 = 75oz.
Our bodies are made up mostly of water. Being fully hydrated takes pressure off our organs to do their jobs, helps flush the body and keep it running smoothly. Drink water!
What should I bring to class?
Water, mat and a towel. For your convenience we also rent and sell mats and water. Showers and changing facilities are also available.
How many times a week should I practice?
Consistent yogis come 3-4 times per week or more. Bikram Choudhury, the creator of the series, recommends coming six times per week for the first two months of practice and then scaling down to 10 times per month. Regular practice will strengthen your spinal and core muscles, and will help alleviate health ailments by providing relief and control over symptoms. Bikram Yoga will bring your body back to the way our bodies were meant to be, in a safe process of restoration and rejuvenation.
